Lunar New Year Celebration

Lunar New Year, or Tet, is an important time for Magic Cup Cafe, as the holiday directly translates to Feast of the Morning of the First Day in English, and is the most important holiday in Vietnam. We spend the day honoring our ancestors, creating a fresh start, and wishing our loved ones good health and prosperity in the new year. The Feast is meant to share, which is why we host an annual Lunar New Year celebration at each of our locations to share our traditions with our Houston and Richardson communities.

During the Lunar New Year event, a local performance group will perform a grand lion dance and we will share red envelopes, or li si, with those who have come to celebrate with us. Our red envelopes include coupon offers like buy one get one half off, one free topping, and even the chance to win a free drink! The event is enjoyable for kids and adults alike and serves as a family-friendly celebration for Chinese New Year.

What is Lunar New Year

If you are unfamiliar with Lunar New Year, you may ask, “Why is the Lunar New Year celebrated outside of the new year typically observed on January 1?” Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, follows the lunar calendar, which means the start of the year falls on a new moon. Because the new year is dependent on a new moon, the date for Lunar New Year differs from year to year in accordance with moon cycles.

Many Asian cultures follow the lunar calendar, which is why Lunar New Year is a widely celebrated national holiday in many countries in east and southeast Asia. This year, Lunar New Year begins on January 25 and ends with the Lantern Festival on February 8. Each year also corresponds with one of twelve Chinese zodiac animals, with 2020 being the year of the rat.

Favorite Magic Cup Drinks for Lunar New Year

As first generation Vietnamese-Americans, we love drawing upon our culture to share with Magic Cup’s guests. I’d like to share some of my favorite drinks for a healthy and happy new year with you!

Nuoc Mat - Winter Melon Artichoke Iced Tea

With the new year comes a fresh opportunity for you to make goals and strive for success with a refocused mind and body. One of my favorite drinks as a refresher for the new year is our Nuoc Mat or winter melon artichoke iced tea. This drink serves as a natural detox to cleanse your body.

Cafe Sua Da - Vietnamese Coffee

Cafe Sua Da, or Vietnamese coffee, is another one of my favorites for the new year. This beverage, made with a dark roast coffee and condensed milk, reminds me of precious moments with my family during childhood. I hope that you can create lasting memories with your loved ones and #sharemagic by enjoying a cup of your favorite beverage together.

Strawberry Smoothie

Red is a prominent color for Lunar New Year since it symbolizes good fortune and joy. Share a fresh strawberry smoothie with your family and friends to spread good luck for the upcoming new year! Our smoothies are made with real fruit and topped with fruit bits for a refreshing, natural taste.

We wish you all a happy Lunar New Year and Year of the Rat! Please stop by for our Lunar New Year events at a location near you. Don’t miss out on our celebration, which includes traditional performances and red envelopes!
